Ga Motor Carrier Compliance Division Officers Focus on Safe Driving Habits for Commercial Motor Vehicles – All On Georgia

Last week, November 15-17, Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) Officers with the Georgia Department of Public Safety conducted a port check and distracted driving detail along the I-95/I-16 corridors and the areas near the Port of Savannah. The detail focused on the unsafe operations of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), inspecting CMVs transporting intermodal containers, and CMVs transporting hazardous materials.

During the detail MCCD Officers issued:

  • 41 Speeding violations
  • Eight Following Too Closely violations
  • 48 Improper Lane Usage violations
  • 20 Cell Phone Usage/Distracted Driving violations

“As Georgia continues to grow, so does the number of vehicles on the roadway,” said Major Wayne Mobley, MCCD Commanding Officer. “I encourage all drivers, CMV as well as passenger vehicles, to stay focused and not drive distracted in order to keep Georgia’s roadways safe!”

Additionally, MCCD Officers conducted 461 inspections, of which 82 were hazmat inspections, placing 34 CMVs and 36 drivers out of service.  This detail is one of many conducted throughout the year to ensure safer driving habits of commercial motor vehicle operators.

On Wednesday, November 9, at 2:16 a.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a commercial motor vehicle accident that occurred on Highway 18, one-quarter mile west of Sheldon, IA.

Daniel Longey, age 42, of Sioux Falls, SD was driving a 2012 Freightliner M2 straight-truck eastbound on Highway 18 when he reported he swerved to avoid a deer on the roadway, lost control of the vehicle and entered the north ditch where the vehicle rolled onto its side.

Longey reported minor injuries and declined further medical attention.

The Freightliner sustained approximately $30,000 in damage.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sheldon Fire Department, Sheldon Ambulance and O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office.

Longey was cited for failure to maintain control.

Commercial Motor Vehicle accident east of Hull – November 5 – Sioux County Sheriff – Sioux County Sheriff

On Saturday, November 5, at 5:04 a.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Ironwood Avenue, two miles east of Hull, IA.

Paul Meyer, age 27, of Hull, was driving a 2014 Peterbilt 389 semi-truck pulling a 2013 Wilson trailer loaded with pigs southbound on Ironwood Avenue. Meyer reported wwhen he met a vehicle traveling northbound on Ironwood Avenue that was in his lane of travel, he overcorrected is vehicle and the trailer entered the west ditch where it rolled onto its side.

Meyer reported minor injuries and declined further medical attention.

The Peterbilt and trailer sustained approximately $80,000 in damage.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Hull Fire Department and Hull Ambulance.

Commercial motor vehicle accident northeast of Rock Valley – October 28 – Sioux County Sheriff – Sioux County Sheriff

On Friday, October 28 at 8:05 a.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a commercial motor vehicle accident that occurred  at the intersection of 280th Street and Goldfinch Avenue, five miles northeast of Rock Valley, IA.

Levi Lang, age 21, of Tappen ND, was driving a 2022 International semi-tractor pulling a Wilson cattle trailer eastbound on 280th Street; he attempted turn right turn onto Goldfinch Avenue when the trailer tires entered the ditch, causing the trailer to  roll into the west ditch.

No injuries were reported.

Damage to the International and trailer was estimated at $100,000.

Lang was cited for failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.

Inspectors looked at equipment, tires and documentation.

Thirty-two vehicles were examined during a commercial motor vehicle blitz conducted by the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) earlier this month. 

Inspectors looked at equipment, tires and documentation and 24 charges were laid for infractions including: 

  • Defective brakes
  • Improper tires
  • Load security
  • Loose or missing wheel fasteners
  • Defective lights
  • Improper coupling devices

Eleven vehicles were taken out of service because they did not meet the minimum safty standards.
